What Buffing Terrazzo Actually Does
Buffing is a light-touch maintenance process that:
- Removes surface soil that mopping can’t reach
- Brings back shine on terrazzo where the existing polish has dulled from traffic
- Smooths out micro-scratches from daily wear
- Prepares the surface for a fresh polish or sealer coat
Buffing uses a low-speed rotary machine with a buffing pad (not diamond abrasives). Light pressure, sometimes with a buffing compound. It’s a maintenance step, not a restoration step.
What Buffing Doesn’t Do
Buffing can’t fix damaged terrazzo:
- Doesn’t remove etching. Chemical damage from acidic spills needs diamond honing — buffing just brings back gloss over damaged surface.
- Doesn’t remove deep scratches. Scratches past the top wear layer need mechanical removal.
- Doesn’t fix cracks or chips. Needs color-matched resin repair.
- Doesn’t renew severely worn terrazzo. Terrazzo that’s been walked on for 20+ years without restoration needs a full grind-hone-polish process.
Buffing is maintenance. Restoration is a different category of work.
When Buffing Is Enough
- Routine maintenance between restorations. Monthly or quarterly buffing extends the life of a full restoration — often from 7-10 years to 12-15 years.
- Light dulling from traffic. Terrazzo that’s been restored within the last 5 years and has lost some shine from daily traffic.
- Post-cleaning touch-up. After deep cleaning, buffing can restore the original gloss level.
- Event prep. Before a major event in a commercial lobby, buffing freshens the finish without needing a full overnight restoration.
When Buffing Isn’t Enough
- Visible scratches under raking light — need honing, not buffing
- Dull patches that don’t respond to buffing — chemical damage needing honing
- Worn-thin terrazzo showing aggregate unevenness — need full restoration
- Terrazzo that hasn’t been restored in 10+ years — full restoration
- Haze that comes back within weeks of buffing — underlying damage, needs honing
Professional vs DIY Buffing
Residential terrazzo floor buffing can be DIY with a rented low-speed rotary and buffing compound. For small home areas, it’s a reasonable project.
Commercial terrazzo buffing — hotel lobbies, government buildings, school corridors — is typically done by professional maintenance crews or contracted out. The finish quality expectations are higher, the equipment is larger, and the scheduling is overnight.

If you’re asking “can I just buff this?” — the answer depends on how long it’s been since the last full restoration.
