Why Terrazzo Floor Cleaning Products Matter

Terrazzo is one of the most durable and beautiful flooring materials available, but using the wrong cleaning products can cause permanent damage. Many common household and commercial cleaners contain acids, alkalis, or abrasives that etch, dull, or discolor terrazzo surfaces. Understanding which products are safe — and which to avoid — is essential for protecting your investment.

Safe Cleaning Products for Terrazzo

pH-Neutral Stone Cleaners

The gold standard for terrazzo maintenance is a pH-neutral cleaner specifically formulated for natural stone and terrazzo. These products clean effectively without attacking the cement or epoxy binder that holds the terrazzo aggregate together. Look for products with a pH between 6.5 and 7.5.

Cleaning products maintain a terrazzo floor but they cannot correct wear. Once the finish is gone, terrazzo floor restoration and repair is what brings it back, and a scheduled maintenance program keeps it there.

Warm Water

For daily maintenance, plain warm water with a microfiber mop is often sufficient. This is the safest possible option and works well for routine cleaning between deeper professional sessions.

Products That Damage Terrazzo

These common products should never be used on terrazzo floors:

Vinegar

Despite its popularity as a natural cleaner, vinegar is acidic (pH 2–3) and will etch cementitious terrazzo on contact. Even diluted vinegar causes cumulative damage with repeated use, leaving dull spots and removing the polished finish.

Bleach

Chlorine bleach is highly alkaline and can discolor both the terrazzo binder and the aggregate chips. It also degrades sealers, leaving the floor vulnerable to staining.

Ammonia-Based Cleaners

Glass cleaners and multi-purpose sprays containing ammonia strip protective sealers and leave a hazy film on polished terrazzo surfaces.

Abrasive Cleaners

Powdered cleansers like Comet or Ajax contain abrasive particles that scratch the polished surface. Once scratched, terrazzo requires professional diamond polishing to restore its finish.

Citrus Cleaners

Orange, lemon, and other citrus-based cleaners are acidic and cause the same etching damage as vinegar.

Daily Terrazzo Maintenance Routine

1. Dust mop with a clean microfiber pad to remove loose dirt and grit
2. Damp mop with warm water or a pH-neutral cleaner
3. Spot clean spills immediately — blot, do not scrub
4. Dry the floor with a clean mop or allow to air dry

Avoid excess water, especially on cementitious terrazzo, as prolonged moisture can cause efflorescence (white mineral deposits).

Professional Terrazzo Restoration

When terrazzo has been damaged by improper cleaning products or years of wear, professional restoration can bring it back to like-new condition. The process includes:

• Diamond grinding to remove scratches, etching, and surface damage
• Progressive honing through increasingly fine diamond grits
• Polishing to restore the mirror-like finish
• Crystallization (optional) to harden the surface and add shine
• Sealing with a penetrating sealer for long-term stain protection

How Often Should Terrazzo Be Professionally Maintained?

• Residential: Every 3–5 years for polishing and sealing
• Commercial (moderate traffic): Annually
• Commercial (high traffic): Every 6–12 months
• Schools and hospitals: Every 6–12 months, often during summer or holiday breaks
