Washington DC has more architecturally significant brass, bronze, and stainless metalwork than almost any other city — historic elevator surrounds, federal building door hardware, embassy fixtures, hotel lobby metalwork, and museum display cases. Rose Restoration has been doing DC commercial metal refinishing since 1984.

Our Metal Restoration Process
- Assessment. On-site identification of metal type (brass, bronze, stainless, copper, iron), condition, finish, and historic/preservation considerations.
- Protection. Adjacent surface masking — marble, wood, and stone need protection from metal chemistry.
- Cleaning. Remove tarnish, oxidation, and surface contamination with appropriate metal-specific chemistry.
- Scratch removal. Progressive abrasive work to eliminate visible scratches without removing protective patina.
- Oxidizing. For brass/bronze, we oxidize to match existing or desired patina.
- Lacquer. Protective clear coat — typically Incralac or similar commercial-grade lacquer for commercial environments.
- Final inspection. Verify finish consistency across all elements.
Historic Metal vs Modern Metal
For National Register and historic-district buildings, we follow preservation-grade methodology:
- Preservation of original patina (not refinishing to new-looking)
- Period-appropriate finish chemistry
- Documentation for preservation files
- Coordination with preservation offices where required
For modern commercial metal, we use standard contemporary restoration approaches — scratch removal, matched lacquer, and ongoing maintenance programs.
