A Chantilly, Virginia homeowner had a loose edge stone on their patio that an earlier handyman repair had not fixed. The stone beside it was chipping, both overhung the driveway, and grout had lifted across the patio after a hard winter freeze. Spring 2026.

Why the earlier fix did not hold
A loose paver or edge stone is almost always a base problem. If what is underneath has washed out or settled, re-gluing the stone on top will not last. We lifted the loose stone, repaired and stabilized the base, and reset the stone on it.
What else we did
- Chipped edge repaired with color-matched patch material.
- Grout joints repointed wherever freezing had broken them or the grout was missing, which also helps keep water out of the base.
- Overhanging edge trimmed and eased, so it no longer sticks out over the driveway.
- Deep cleaned and sealed; cap stones cleaned, sealed and repointed; a displaced wall stone reset.
What a similar patio can learn
Freeze and thaw works on every weak joint, and water that gets under a stone weakens the base. Repointing broken joints early is the cheapest way to keep stones from coming loose.

Questions
Why does a patio stone keep coming loose?
Usually because the base under it has failed. On this Chantilly patio the base was repaired before the stone was reset.
Why did the patio grout come up after winter?
Water gets into weak joints and expands when it freezes. Broken joints were repointed here to keep water out.
