Marble Spalling: What Causes It and How to Fix It

Marble spalling is when the surface of marble flakes, pits, or breaks away in thin layers. It shows up as chipping, surface delamination, and crumbling edges, and it is almost always a sign that moisture or salts are attacking the stone from within. The good news: in most cases it can be repaired and, more importantly, prevented from coming back.

What Causes Marble Spalling

  • Trapped moisture: Water moving through the stone carries dissolved minerals to the surface, where they crystallize and push the surface apart.
  • Salts and efflorescence: De-icing salts, ground moisture, and cleaning residues leave salt deposits that expand and flake the surface.
  • Freeze-thaw cycles: On exterior marble, water in the pores expands as it freezes, breaking off thin layers.
  • Acidic damage and improper sealing: Acidic exposure and trapped moisture under the wrong sealer accelerate breakdown.

How Marble Spalling Is Repaired

Repair starts with finding the moisture source, because patching the surface without addressing the cause only delays the problem. From there, our technicians remove loose and failing material, fill and rebuild the damaged areas with color-matched material, refinish the surface to match, and apply the appropriate breathable sealer. Where moisture intrusion is the driver, we address drainage and sealing so the stone can dry properly.

Can It Be Prevented?

Yes. Keep marble sealed with a breathable, stone-appropriate sealer, avoid de-icing salts near marble, fix drainage and moisture issues promptly, and never use acidic cleaners. Regular professional maintenance catches early pitting before it spreads.
