Government & Historical Preservation
Services: Marble floor restoration, stone wall preservation, masonry repair, surface sealing
Requirements: Secretary of the Interior’s Standards compliance
The Challenge
The Virginia State Capitol in Richmond, designed by Thomas Jefferson and completed in 1788, is one of the most historically significant government buildings in the United States. Centuries of foot traffic had created deep wear patterns and etch marks on marble floors. Some areas had incompatible modern treatments that altered appearance. The project required both technical stone expertise and historic preservation craft.
Our Approach
All work per Secretary of the Interior’s Standards. Careful diamond honing preserving maximum original stone thickness. Polishing calibrated to match historical finish levels. Limestone and decorative stone cleaned with non-abrasive methods. Repairs using natural hydraulic lime mortar matching original construction. Work phased around legislative schedule.
The Result
Marble floors and stone surfaces restored to a level appropriate to a National Historic Landmark — honoring Jefferson’s vision while meeting functional demands of a working government building.
