Etch marks and water rings are the most common damage we see on marble, and the most misunderstood. They are not stains, and no cleaner will remove them. Rose Restoration removes etching and water rings from marble by refinishing the stone itself, across Washington, DC, Maryland, and Northern Virginia. We are rated 4.8 across more than 156+ Google reviews and restore marble everywhere from powder rooms to the lobbies of the Four Seasons Hotel DC.

The problem: what etching and water rings really are

Marble is calcium carbonate, so anything acidic reacts with it. A splash of lemon, wine, coffee, a cleaning product, or even hard water sitting overnight eats a microscopic layer off the surface. That dull, lighter, sometimes ring shaped mark is not sitting on top of the stone like a stain. It is a change in the surface itself, which is why wiping, scrubbing, and stain removers do nothing. A water ring from a glass or a planter is the same thing: a faint etched outline where moisture and minerals dulled the polish.

The solution: refinishing, not cleaning

Because the damage is in the surface, the fix is to refinish the surface. We hone the affected area to remove the etched layer, then polish it back to match the surrounding finish, whether that is a soft honed matte or a full reflective polish. On a light etch this is quick and localized. On a heavily etched vanity or tabletop we refinish the whole top so the result is uniform rather than a patch. Done correctly, the mark is gone and the repair is invisible.

Etch severity and what it takes to remove

Severity What you see How we remove it
Light etch or water ring Faint dull spot or outline, smooth to the touch Spot polish, often same visit
Medium etch Clearly dull, slightly rough Localized honing and polishing
Deep etch Rough, pitted, or many overlapping marks Refinish the full surface for a uniform result

Why not to try it yourself

The polishing powders and etch removers sold for home use can lighten a very faint mark, but on anything more they leave a shinier or duller patch that is more obvious than the etch was. Marble refinishing is done with progressive diamond abrasives and the judgment to blend a repair into the finish around it. This is our core craft, and it is why we restore marble for hotels and museums that cannot afford a visible patch.

Keeping it from coming back

Once we refinish the marble we can seal it with an impregnating sealer, which buys you time against stains but not against acid, since etching is physical damage rather than a stain. The real prevention is simple: use coasters, wipe acidic spills quickly, and clean only with a pH neutral stone cleaner. See our natural stone sealing page for how sealing fits in.

Frequently asked questions

Can etch marks be removed from marble?

Yes. Etch marks are removed by refinishing the marble, honing away the etched layer and polishing the surface back to its original finish. Because etching is surface damage rather than a stain, refinishing is the only thing that actually removes it, and it works.

How do you remove water rings from marble?

A water ring is a light etch, so we remove it by polishing the dulled area back to the surrounding finish. Faint rings are often handled in a single visit.

What causes marble to etch?

Acid. Lemon, wine, coffee, tomato, many cleaning products, and even hard water react with the calcium in marble and dissolve a microscopic layer, leaving a dull mark. It is not dirt and it is not a stain.

Can you fix marble etching without replacing the counter?

Yes, nearly always. Etching lives in the top surface, so refinishing that surface removes it and saves the countertop. Replacement is not necessary for etch damage.

How much does marble etch removal cost in DC?

Light spot polishing is modest, while refinishing a full vanity, tabletop, or floor is priced by the area and condition. See the 2026 DC area cost index for ranges, and we give a firm number after seeing the marble.
