Marks on marble fall into a few categories, and each calls for a different fix. Knowing which one you are looking at matters, because the wrong product can make the damage worse. Here is how the marks differ and how they are properly removed.
Surface Dirt and Grime
Everyday dust, smudges, and light soil sit on top of the stone. These come off with a pH-neutral, stone-safe cleaner and a soft cloth. Avoid vinegar, lemon, bleach, and general-purpose sprays, which are acidic or abrasive and will etch marble over time.
Stains (Organic, Oil, and Ink)
Stains soak into the stone and change its color from within, so cleaning the surface will not lift them. They are drawn out with a poultice, a paste that pulls the staining material back out of the pores. The right poultice depends on the stain type, and deep or stubborn stains are best handled professionally to avoid spreading them.
Etch Marks (Dull Spots and Water Rings)
Etching is the most common marble damage and the most misunderstood. Acidic foods, drinks, and cleaners react with the calcium in marble and eat away a microscopic layer, leaving dull, lighter spots or rings. This is not a stain and cannot be cleaned away. Etch marks are removed by honing and polishing the marble back to an even finish, a refinishing process best done by a professional with the correct diamond abrasives.
Hard-Water and Mineral Marks
Around faucets and showers, mineral deposits build up and can both coat and etch the surface. Light buildup is cleaned with stone-safe methods; where the minerals have etched the marble underneath, the area is refinished and then sealed.
What Not to Do
Skip acidic cleaners, abrasive pads, and DIY polishing compounds. They commonly deepen etching or scratch the surface, turning a small mark into a larger refinishing job.
