Why limestone hearths get honed, not just cleaned
Limestone is soft and porous. A hearth collects soot, ash and spills, and some of it works into the surface. Honing takes off that marked top layer evenly, and sealing slows down what comes next. Limestone usually looks best honed rather than high-gloss, which also hides wear better.
